Older Yamaha XS 650, Inline twin, classic styling, can be had for cheap. compared to Triumphs. They are excellent in reliability, have more power stock than a eqavalent Bonne, and parts are still plentiful (you can still go to the dealer or scrapyard and get parts for them easily)
That's a lot of pounds for a bike that basically is rather over priced due to speculator-collectors. It would be cheaper to take a flight to the US, run around a couple of the Bike Shops around there and buy yourself something and take it back home. You could buy a rolling bike chassis, with engine and wheels and add the tank, seats etc back home. That would be far cheaper. An example http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Triumph-Bonneville-1979-Triumph-T-140-Bonneville-750_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQitemZ190264617805QQsspagenameZRSSQ3aBQ3aSRCHQ3aUSQ3a103
is available on Ebay. Looking through the private classifieds ads will find cheaper examples. It's not difficult to find a reasonably priced bike In the US, I bought a Triple for under $1,600, running.
look for a vintage late 70's early 80's YAMAHA 650 twin.
the one called a650 Seritage Special has similar looks , lots of parts available used. and I owned a new 79 and loved it. As I am older and learned to ride on BSA's and Triumph's. This was the closest thing I have seen and they start and ride easier ,better brakes etc.
a good used one can be found on ebay @$ 600.00 to $1500.00.
I have to agree with other responders that a very good alternative would be a XS650 Yamaha. I have an original 1978 model 'D' that needed little in repairs and is a very good reliable runner. There are plenty of part sources and reasonably priced. Check out any of the numerous XS650 club websites for lots of info. I also have a 1969 T120R (presently under restoration) which I really love to ride. It does have the advantage of lighter weight, better handling and simpler maintenance.
I'm a former bike mechanic familiar with both machines and IMHO both are great bikes with their own little quirks.BTW, my favorite long tour bike is my '85 GL1200 Gold Wing. cheers Cooter
